Brainard Celebrates Distinguished School with Superintendent Del Cute

Brainard's staff and parents celebrated being named a California Distinguished School with Superintendent Linda Del Cueto and Instructional Director John Rome who came to the school for a Tuesday event.

Mrs, Del Cute told parents and staff how proud she is of the dedication and hard work parents, staff, and students made to achieve this special statewide honor. She mentioned that of the 121 schools in Local District Northeast, Brainard was one of only five to achieve the honor. Statewide, only 5% of California schools receive the honor.

She presented Principal Jaque' Kampschroer and staff members with a plaque and $1,000 for marketing Brainard, which is added to the $2,000 given by LAUSD!

Valentines for the Elderly

Valentines for the Elderly

Brainard Elementary fifth graders brought a lot of love and kindness to residents of a local convalescent hospital on Valentine's Day! The homemade valentines, which were created by nearly every student as part of Brainard's kindness project, brightened the day of the war veterans and elderly.

The students were joined by Local District Northeast Superintendent Linda Del Cueto, School Board Member Kelly Gomez, Los Angeles School Police Officers Cabrera and Flood, fifth grader teacher Kimberly Upshaw and Principal Jaque' Kampschroer.

Students sang to the residents and played games. Convalescent hospital director Marcia Walden said many of the patients hadn't spoken for a long time, but spoke to the students. And, the students themselves learned that the best feeling of happiness is when you make someone else happy.

Did you know that you can download five songs a week if you have an Los Angeles City library card? Brainard Elementary School parents learned that and more at Monday's Coffee with the Principal when representatives from the local library came to Brainard.

Alicia Reyes, bilingual outreach librarian, provided parents with updated library cards and a glimpse into the services, which include free tutoring from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. from elementary school to college as well as a summer reading club for kids and teens, computer classes, SAT/PSAT/ACT help for students. Anyone updating their resume can also have someone review it.

Brainard Principal Jaque' Kampschroer is planning to invite library representatives to various school events for the convenience of parents wanting to get a library card for themselves or their children as well as having a parent workshop in literacy in the near future.
